Research topics contributing to the project “Understanding Neural Computation for Double Articulation Analysis Bridging Sensory-motor Information and Natural Language in Human Brain” (Leader: Tadahiro Taniguchi), which is a sub-project in the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas “Comparison and Fusion of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Science” (Leader: Kenji Doya).

A human brain can analyze a two-layer hierarchical structure embedded in speech signal called double articulation structure, i.e., the speech signal is segmented into words and phonemes in a hierarchical manner [1-3].

However, the computational process of double articulation analysis in the human brain has not been revealed in neuroscience.  In artificial intelligence and developmental robotics, we have not developed a robot that can automatically learn a language using double articulation analyzer from human-robot and sensorimotor real-world interaction [1-3].

In this research project, we clarify the neural computation for double articulation analyzer and dynamic category formation. This project aims to contribute to:
* Understanding the neural mechanism that supports human language acquisition based on sensorimotor information,
* Developing the next-generation communication robot,
* Developing AI system that can estimate other's intention,
* Understanding disease related to language,  planning, and sensorimotor behaviors including schizophrenia, and
* Investigating theories bridging deep learning and Bayesian nonparametrics.

Our main research goals are listed as follows.

(1) Research on a computational model for double articulation analyzer and dynamic categorization.
(2) Research on neural mechanism of double articulation analysis and dynamic categorization.
(3) Developing a robot that can automatically acquire language and motor behaviors from sensorimotor experiences.

【Expected candidate skills, interests, and backgrounds】

- Good mathematical background.
- English communication skill for daily discussion and writing papers: IELTS 6 (TOEIC 740).
- Programming skills in C++ and Python, Matlab for machine learning and intelligent robot.
- Applicants are expected to be interested in natural language, language acquisition, the human neural system for cognition and social behavior. Having related academic backgrounds is preferable.

 

 

[Qualifications]

Applicants must be interested in the research topic and have a strong will to conduct their research positively and actively.
Applicants must have a master degree in a related field before they start working as research assistants.
Applicants must study in the doctoral course of Graduate Scool of Information Science and Engineering while they are hired as research assistants.

September 2017 or April 2018 (After the admission to the doctor course)

 

[Employment status]

One year contract.

It can be extended up to 3 years based on the evaluation by the suprviser.

[Compensation]

About 2.5 million JPY/year

* Note that this contract is not a scholarship, but a labor contract. 
* You need tuition for the doctor course. The tuition is about 0.5 million JPY/year.

新学術領域「人工知能と脳科学の対照と融合」(代表:銅谷賢治)に係る,計画研究「感覚運動と言語をつなぐ二重分節解析の脳内計算過程の理解と応用」(代表:谷口忠大),推進に関わる研究テーマ

 

二重分節構造は人間の音声言語には音声信号が音素に分節化され,また,これが単語へと分節化されるという二段階の分節構造を指し,人間の言語に特有の構造と言われる.この事実は人間の脳が二重分節構造を解析すること(二重分節解析)に秀でた計算能力を持っていることを示唆している.しかし,脳科学の分野においては人間の脳内における二重分節解析の計算過程は未だ明らかではない.また,人工知能の分野においても二重分節解析を用いて人間との実音声対話から言語を獲得し実世界コミュニケーションを実現するロボットの設計論は確立されていない.本研究では人間の言語獲得の基盤としての二重分節解析と動的カテゴリ形成の脳内計算過程を明らかにし,新たなコミュニケーションロボットの設計論,統合失調症などの言語・思考・感覚運動に渡る疾患の理解と支援に役立てることを目指す.

【Expected candidate skills, interests, and backgrounds】

・適切な数学的背景知識
・英語を日常的に用い研究を推進できる程度の英語力: IELTS 6 (TOEIC 740)
・C++もしくはPython, Matlabを用いて機械学習や知能ロボットに関わるプログラミングを行える技術
