Prof. Taniguchi's column appeared in the "Modern Words" section of the Kyoto Shimbun

A column by Prof. Tadahiro Taniguchi appeared in the Kyoto Shimbun evening edition of September 11, 2026, in the ‘Contemporary Words’ section. The title of this column is “Joint Attention with You.” I was struck to learn that the everyday act of a parent and child looking at the same thing and exchanging words is called “joint attention,” and that it forms the foundation of language and society. Nowadays, even when we are with family or friends, we are often each looking at a different screen, such as a smartphone. This column made me want to cherish the time spent looking at the same things as the people beside us. We encourage you to read it.
